The lyrics for the song were inspired by the epidemic of homeless veterans in America. According to government reports, there are at least 40,000 homeless veterans in the United States. Of those veterans, at least 50% have serious mental illness and 70% have substance abuse problems. The band wrote "The Scarred" to make aware of this problem.
